Choosing a new computer should be an exciting excursion; you can find what you need that will make your work easier and may also find something you can use for entertainment as well. Choosing between desktops or laptops may be a difficult decision, and you may wonder why you would prefer one over the other.
Obviously you can do just about anything with either desktops or laptops, except travel. If you need your computer for going back and forth to work or elsewhere, then your choice may be simple. For families and others who use their computers for a number of factors, there may be reasons to choose desktops rather than laptops.
One thing to consider is that laptops typically overheat more readily than desktops. This is the nature of their design and internal workings; all those components in that small space create more heat which needs more venting. If you choose a laptop, be sure that you keep it clear of anything surrounding the fan area at all times. Typically desktops stay cooler so they may be a better option for those who will be using their computers all day.
While size itself does not mean that a computer has more memory or more speed, often desktops will be faster and have more memory because they can hold more chips and processors and other components. You can add speed and memory to a laptop or get one that is sufficient for you, but typically when you're using your computer for many different applications and want to add in various types of hardware, it's good to choose desktops. They are often a better choice for the serious computer users who don't mind if the model has a permanent home.
If you're going to use your computer for things like television and movie viewing, you may want to think of desktops as well since they can often accommodate larger screens. There are many laptops with large screens that may be sufficient, but think of your comfort as well. Putting a large screen on a desk rather than having to hold it in your lap can mean really enjoying those shows and programs, and this is why many prefer desktops for this type of application.
This is also a consideration if you're thinking of playing games on your computer. Being able to hook up many controllers and have more than one person join you can mean enjoying it all the more. This too is a consideration for desktops and one you should think about, depending upon your use of your model.
It's also sometimes easier to upgrade components of desktops than it is a laptop. As an example, suppose you want an ergonomic keyboard. It's difficult to change this out with a laptop. You may also want to upgrade your screen and again, with a laptop this means an entirely new computer. When you choose desktops you can easily upgrade different parts without getting a completely new machine.
